Our Philosophy

At The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool & Nursery we are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and uniquely enriching environment in which to foster your child’s health, physical, social, intellectual and emotional development. We consider ourselves a part of
your family and community, striving to care for your child as well as you do.

We believe that children learn and develop in an early childhood environment where the teacher has a respectful image of children as being competent and capable young people. The teacher’s role is a co-researcher and co-constructor in the learning process which allows children to explore, question, reflect, problem solve, theorise and encourages self-expression.

We acknowledge that children contribute to their own learning through the relationships they form and experiences they have. We believe that given choice, children will drive their own learning. We value the reciprocal relationships that we have with parents and welcome participation in the learning process. By teachers documenting the children’s work in a respectful way, we allow children to revisit their learning and help inform parents of the learning that has occurred.

OUR ASPIRATIONS:

We aspire to provide a range of learning and other outcomes for children attending our Centre, including:
•  A sense of emotional and physical wellbeing;
•  Intellectual curiosity /problem solving skills;
•  A capacity to listen and communicate thoughts and feelings;
•  Respect for others and acceptance and valuing of diversity within the community;
•  Resilience, including capacity to cope with change, accept failure and overcome setbacks.

These are broad outcomes to be nurtured and strengthened over a number of years in collaboration with parents and whānau. Our aspirations recognise and allow for different learning patterns and pathways, individual strengths, interests and needs, and different teaching and learning contexts, within our centre.

From the moment a child enters The Cat’s Pyjamas, as a baby, toddler or preschooler, we seek to promote these outcomes. We recognise them as the basis for ongoing success at school.
